I have about a kilogram of powder and it is damp, was not in a sealed container,
Can anyone tell me how to SAFELY dry it,it is the middle of autumn here and not much hot sun.

thanks in advance

I'd dump it out on a towl and put it in the window.I'v herd of people dring it in the oven on low temp but i'v never tried that.

You need to find somewhere that's warm and dry. Perhaps enough sun gets through the car windows to warm it up enough? I've dried a lot of stuff in my car, but we have intense sun year 'round here. If you can't find a warm dry spot, you might need to wait till you can.

Lay it in the sun spread thinly on a cotton cloth is best. Good powder will dry in this manner though it may not stay granulated it its been very wet.
If you have a place with steam or hot water heat it can be dried over a register. But this is best done outside.

I have dried damp, clumpy powder in the oven by spreading the powder on a cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil.

Turn the oven on the lowest setting that will ignite the burner and let the oven warm. Turn the oven off and insert the cookie sheet. Leave the oven door cracked just enough to allow moisture to escape.

good luck.

I haven't done jerky (yet!). But I sure dry a lot of summer fruits and veggies that way. :)

I cannot believe that people are actually recommending putting black gunpowder into an oven. :shake:

I put a sheet of aluminium foil on the electric plate warmer my missus uses for the vegs on the table. I leave the powder on for 10 to 15 mins and when its dry it doesnt stick to my fingures.

It does work,,don't get it too hot, don't leave it too long, warm the oven first, turn it off, have powder ready to put in.

There is ALWAYS some danger involved using this method, a clean oven is best so there isn't any
glowing bits to fall in the powder. Don;t try to dry more than 2 oz at a time.

If you have ANY misgivings, don't do it!!!

If you pour out and spread the damp powder out on aluminum foil, and put it in a south-facing window, it will dry quickly. The aluminum will conduct heat away from the powder so it doesn't get too hot.

Chris,
I don't see any problem if the thermostat is on the lowest setting, which registers about 100-125 degrees on my oven. Most of that heat will escape when the door is opened to insert the powder.

Also make note I mentioned the oven is turned OFF before the powder is placed in the oven.

Hey, its better than the microwave. :rotf: :rotf:

Please DO NOT dry powder in the microwave.
Gotta add the requisite disclaimer, donchaknow. :shocked2:

man oh man if the British only knew how to do that at the battle of Saratoga... I'd be toasting the Queen
