Just finished this combination salt and pepper horn. Its the first time I've tried to flatten a horn and it worked out real well.

Very tastefully done. Like the scrim. How did you flatten the horn, hot oil, water?

thanks everyone.
The horn was flattened using water. It is 2 1/2 in. tall, 4 in. wide and about 1 1/4 deep.

Paul , the divider is wood. I slotted the top and bottom plug after fitting the divider to the sides of the horn. I then use my pins to lock it in place.

RT, I am by no means an expert and I have done very few Horns that had to be shaped but I use boiling water to do my shaping.
When the water comes to a boil I immerse the horn in the water usually for about 20 to 30 minutes, low end for thin horns high end for thicker. This allows the horn to become soft and shapeable.
I have just recently learned that a lot of hornmakers use heat guns or even hot oil to do the same thing but they tell me that either of those is a lot less forgiving if you leave them in the oil to long or apply to much heat with a gun.

RT, the thing to remember about shaping a horn is the thinner the better. 1/8 in. will work but if you can get it thinner you won't have to boil it as long.
OH, don't do this in your wifes kitchen. She will not like you and I don't want her huntin' me. It stinks to high heaven when the horn gets hot. :shake: :surrender:

I just got back from working three days at the accoutrement judging event at Dixon's Gunmakers Fair, and I assure you that this piece would hold it's own with the other art on the table. A first class piece to be sure.
