Howdy! I finished giving my wool leggins a good cold walnut dye bath and hate like h@#$ to throw all of the leftover dye out! Hey,,this stuff takes a lot of effort to make. :shake: Any of yall have any suggestions on how to preserve the dye without it going sour? I already added vinegar to set the dye in the wool....but now it smells like a walnut pickle!!! :youcrazy:

Well I can't help ya Trapper, but would like to add my own question that fits in here..

I just moved to a new house in the middle of a walnut grove. I found websites on what to do with the nuts, but how do I save up the husks to give to my walnut-died friends? They sure seem like they would rot fast (the husks, not the friends)

Denatured alcohol from the hardware store. 2 ounces to the pint is what I use. Walnut stain will always stink, some.

How about regular rubbing alcohol? Ive got plenty of that....I use the 90% to wipe the bore of my rifle after cleaning to remove any water that might be left.I dont reckon Ive ever heard of denatured alcohol. What is it used for anyhow? Thanks a bunch.....TN :hatsoff:

Denatured Alcohol is 95% ethyl alcohol (same as beer) with 4% methyl alcohol (highly toxic) and 1% pyridine (to make it taste bad). This is to stop people from drinking it - it's deadly.

Rubbing alcohol is iso-Propyl alcohol, which has a different structure entirely to ethyl alcohol. It evaporates very quickly, which is why it is used in cleansers. Denatured alcohol is both a thinner and solvent for shellac.

"Rubbing" alcohol is Isopropyl alcohol and is usually diluted with water to to about 70-90 percent and it can leave a residue behind after it dries. Recording studios will use denatured to clean the heads on the machines because it leaves no residue.

The best/worse way I know to keep walnut dye was when a kid. Don/t wear rubber gloves when handling and working those green walnut hulls, the color will last on your hands until it wears off. :rotf:

I'd Freeze it. I boiled up a mess of walnut hulls in Ca. and left the jugs in the garage, after having sat threough the summer, I cracked the cap on one of the jugs. . . the oder about drove me out of there,
it was terrible!

I've had good luck with both freezing and using alcohol as a preservative. Depends on how much freezer space your wife will let you take up.
I've had it go bad on me also. Kind of made me look like this :shocked2: when I opened the jug.
