Whats a "good" "cheap" scale to get for weighing yer balls? Mine is "missing" and I dont think was working well anyway, still was getting fliers last time out with the Dutch system in mind.

I 'm a reloader for a lot of stuff and my rcbs balance scale works for everything. If you reload ammo just use what you have already and it will be ok.

Takes forever to weigh a hundred balls on a balance beam. With a digital you can weigh and sort a 100 in five minutes.

Amazon or Cabelas, they had the biggest tents at the Mountain Man Rendezvous back in the day (this was way before "Prime") Think Dutch was at the last one. rolled in in a 6 mule wagon with a snake oil mix called "ballistol"

When we talk about weighing our lead balls, we are getting past being totally historically correct. Historically a ball would be accepted if there were no wrinkles or an obvious void at the sprue.

So a scale can be found at the usual retailers and at Harbor Freight. When we get into accuracy, we are stepping a bit past historical or period correctness and into Dutch Schoultz's methods to obtain performance accuracy.

Historically we rejected cast balls that were a little too hazy or wrinkled and we were content with that. True. We, at the same time, also had something we called fliers. We accepted flyers about the same way we accept sun sets or thunder storms. An act of the Almighty and we had little choice buto accept those fliers as we;;.

By wrighing out lead balls, cast or swaged, we can eliminate themysterous flyers. Out of respect for Daniel Boone should we stick with the fires?. It's a personal choice. As it costs as much in time, powder and lead to produce a flyer, being cheap I elected to avoid the flye and use only solid lead balls that wuld atay on course.

Not sure of the point of your question?

If you are suggesting that anything but a "traditional scale" is inappropriate I can only say that you are welcome to do things your way and I'll do the same.

For sorting balls, I'll go modern and save a heap of time. I run them all across the scale, and everytime I find the heaviest so far, I zero the scale with it, set it aside and keep going til I have done them all. The scale is ten zeroed on the heaviest ball. Then I run the lot back through the scale and anything that shows -1.5 or more gets tossed into the scrap pile for re-melting. It's fast and easy and takes 5-10 minutes. Doing the same task on a beam would take hours.
You can be as traditional as you want, and enjoy it to the max. I bet you still drive home in something other than a buckboard or a saddle though...
