Scope for NEF Sidekick

I want to install a scope on my NEF Sidekick - I am pretty proficient and knowledgable on bows and such, but am very ignorant to the whole gun/muzzleloader world. If someone could suggest a "type" or "model" and explain (for my learning) I would be grateful. For instance, what exactly does it mean when someone says "3x9x40" - I remember from my youth years older hunters slinging around the numbers - wonder if they new what was going on or not ... not sure.
The bottom line is I do not know what is going on! But I want to know. Also, I have seen there are "muzzleloader/shotgun" scopes - I assume that is because of the shorter distances typically that one would shoot with that type of a weapon verses a high powered rifle. What say you ...
