Had this horn on the bench and wanted to try a Tansel style horn. This is my second horn and I learned probably more on this horn than my first! It’s coming along I need to age the copper nails and I will ad a wire staple up front. Had to bring the nose of the horn back quite a bit after I got a bit thin and I cracked the back of the horn after over driving the plug. Overall I think it was a good salvage! Also made the stopper from the cut off piece of horn. Never seen a stopper made from the horn tip but I’m sure I’m not the first to do it but it turned out nice I think. Also tried a little carving on the plug. What do y’all think?

Mike

Great to see!
One thought on the horn stopper: it may not be the best choice of materials for practical/daily use. Horn will not compress like wood will, and in order to try to fit it snugly (it needs friction) into the spout you may split the spout itself. One work around would be to use a wooden dowel with the horn piece as a top finial.
Just a thought.
Your horn has nice warmth to it :)

Good thoughts! Good idea with the wood two piece stopper!

Nice work! I like the hand-carved plug. Why 2 holes off center in th e plug? I am used to seeing 1 hole for filling, curious as to your 2. (They look too big for the staple you mentioned.)

That is the retention method the strap will be run through the two holes and tied off. The staple will be insofurther up near the neck of the horn as the front securing method. I have seen som others done with the two holes and thought I would give it a try, no other reason for doing it really. Thanks for the kind words!
