What if your gun get stolen???

Could you ID it?? (production guns, not one of a kind custom guns)

I could, here's how...

On the inside of the side plate on all of my muzzleloaders I stamp my name or ID mark...

(not my real side plate, just for clarification)

If my Bess is recovered, I can offer proof that it's mine by removing the sideplate and revealing my name.

Also works on the underside of the barrel's rib, someplace not seen without removing a part that obscures it...

How are you going to get the under rib off to put a mark on it since it's attached to the barrel? :shocking:

I always put my name and social security number engraved on the underside of the butt plate. That way it's easy to get at if need be.
I suppose it would be easy for thieves to find but I'm figuring they would never look. As far as the social security number is concerned, I'm not afraid of black helicopter.

Just for info , if you are going to make up an ID number , a lot of police and insurance companies would like to see a mark containing six characters ...and.. either 2 numbers and 4 letters or 2 letters and 4 numbers . Might help :m2c:

I'm suppose to have a stamp made with my family crest (think of the soles of two shoes as the wearer is fleeing). Once it's made (the real one and not the bottom of moccassin version), I'll probably stamp my home made guns with them.

BTW, I've one barrel that's signed.

FWIW, all of my firearms have serial numbers on them and I keep a detailed inventory of all purchases & sales on my PC, with the file backed up on a diskette kept off site at another location...I need to set up and photograph all of them on some cold rainy Sunday this winter...
