Between 1830-1840 what would have been the typical way to secure a .50 cal pistol to a 3 inch belt? Just stuff it in there or was some form of a holster or tie down used? Thanks

I stuff my pistol in my belt... However, some pistols have belt hooks built right on them so you can hook it to your belt. Never cared for that... There use to be a "frog" type belt holster available from "Traditions"... I bought one years ago and didn't care for it either...

To me, stuffing my pistol in my belt is comfortable and it's not going anywhere... It's also easy to set down on the ground or on a stump at Rendezvous... You don't have to keep adjusting your pistol like you do when it's hung from a belt hook, or in a holster... :m2c:

Just stick it in your belt for PC carry. Holsters were for use on horseback and attached to the saddle.

Since Frog's were used for carrying tomahawks and bayonettes it is OK to assume, a slight modification would allow a pistol to be shoved into one, just as SquirrelRex's link.
:eek:r a belt or sash hook- very easily used and attached.

I've seen these holsters for sale, and if I get a pistol to carry, I'll definitely get one of them. I've considered buying one to tote my tomahawk, but it cants the wrong direction for my preference.

Stikin ma pistol inter ma pants might look neat, but Ah don't thin Ah likes tha ideer o pointin a loaded pistol at anythin that won't grow back iffen it gets shot off. ::

Right-hand is the standard version he makes, but all you have to do is contact him with a request and he'll make a lefty version for you. See the description at the bottom of the picture.

I have pistols with hooks and they work well but when I made my latest pistol I didn't want a hook so made a holster.
It works well.

Thanks to all who have responded. Deadeye, I would sure love to see a larger image of your belt and what you are carrying on it. Any chance of posting a larger picture?

I'd like to see that holster and I beleive I have seen something like at voos. I would just feel better having the pistol secured.

It looks like you have a large possibles bag on your belt too, in addition to a very nice looking knife and sheath.

Thanks

Frank

I was surprised that pic was so small, hopefully this one is larger. I made the holster to match that knife sheath since I've been packing that one lately. The pouch isn't very big, I just use it to hold my wallet and a pen or pencil. Holsters like this are easy to make, it's just 2 folded pieces of leather sewed or riveted together. One large enough for your belt and the other large enough for the gun.

Deadeye,

Thanks for the big pic! Outstanding workmanship! The brass rivets and fringe look great on your rig.

I just made a holster and a knife sheath. But I am a beginner and my leather work is not of your quality and my stuff is all sewed. I have a purchased belt bag for my wallet, fire starting kit etc.

I found that I can secure the knife and sheath in the loop that attaches the holster to the belt. Total length of knife & sheath is only 10-1/2 inches and it fits perfectly. I have seen others with knives held horizontally on their belts but can't remember if anyone else has done this.

Thanks again,

Frank, Good idea, you could sew or rivet the sheath inside the belt loop with the handle to the front and out of the way of the pistol grip. I'll have to work on that.

Ghost,

I hope not! I kind of half-way double wrapped the inside loop of the holster so the second wrap ends just under the hammer. Makes a tighter fit and also gives two very heavy layers of leather at the trigger guard so the wieght of the gun should never cause that part of the holster to sag. The rear sight has only very slight pressure against the leather and the pistol drops down in the holster pretty far.

I have holster for all of my modern handguns and I just had to have one for the BP pistol too! ha!

Truthfully, the pistol is very heavy and I doubt I will actually wear it much but I have it if I need it. The pistol is actually more comfortable just stuck in the belt because it brings all that weight closer to my side. And as you said, that is pc.

I have not yet seen a pistol shoot at a rendezvous but I think that would be fun.

I stole an idea from the rifle range at the voo in Cannon Falls, MN. I obtained a very large wooden spool used for wire cable, turned it on its side and cut V-notches into the perimeter of what is now the top. Then ran a hole cutter through the bottom of the V to round it out and we use these notches to rest our rifles in when we are shooting. The butt of the rifle rest on the bottom end of the spool and keeps them off the ground. I live in the country and have a "backyard" rifle/pistol and trap range as well as a hawk block. All I need now is many history lessons!
