Securing the buttplate

Late 1500's/1600 English Snaphaunce project, lock from the Rifleshoppe (English musket #579).

How was the buttplate secured? Would screws be incorrect/uncommon?

If nailed, what head configuration?

If secured with screws, what would the heads look like?

Erzulis, the only method I have personally seen is nails with square heads or countersunk and filed off. I suspect that there are other methods used since NOTHING is always for sure with old timey guns. Cheers, Bookie

This build is full of surprises. The lockplate is so long, that the rightside lock panel runs parallel to the bore, but the leftside is parallel to the tapered barrel flat.

The sliding pan must have a uniform border so the right side barrel flat is taken to bore parallel the last 2 inches or so.

Anyway, it has been a very informative and fun build so far.

I will get some square nails from TOTW.

If it helps, the earlier arms that I own that have metal buttplates are all nailed on as well.
