Can dry firing the set trigger without cocking the hammer cause damage?
My understanding is that if any damage could happen at all, it might be with the sear engaged at half cock...so any dry firing I do is with the hammer fully forward and the sear disengaged & riding free

Roundball is correct.

You can cock and "fire" the set trigger over and over as long as the hammer is down.
This makes practicing your trigger release a easy thing to do.

If the hammer is at "half cock" there is a very good chanch that the nose of the sear, or the half cock notch in the tumbler will be broken.

zonie :)

I wonder if dry firing, using only the set triggers would have any real affect?

If you are shooting a flint gun, make a wooden "Flint" to use during your dry fire practice.

If percussion, slide a short length of heavy wall rubber hose over the nipple. The hose should protured far enough from the nipple to prevent the hammer from contacting the nipple.
