What do you use to knock the shine off a shiny finish?

I'm worried about using something too abrasive or something that will only burnish.

Thanks!

On wood, a green scratchy pad..or old Levi's
on metal...cold blueing and chlorox.

Not sure what you are asking??

In the forum Acoutrements, Tamora started a thread titled "Making shiny knife metal not so shiny. There are some tips there that might help you.

I wasn't clear - I should have said on wood, after finishing. I've been using Chambers traditional oil finish, which leaves a very shiny finish after several coats and needs dulling.

In fact, using test pieces I've found that after letting it dry thoroughly, extra fine steel wool lightly rubbed works best. I don't use steel wool otherwise, but by this stage with everything dry there's less worry about those wool particles and they can easily be wiped off.

Behr makes a satin tung oil, I have never used it, but I have seen one modern rifle re-finished with it and it looked really good.

Also I've just read about using a piece of old burlap or denim to get the satin finish. I'll try that too.

Being already finished, a light brushing with oooo steel wool will probably be your best option. One trick I have found though is after staining start out with two or three coats of "baby oil" each rubbed in good and let dry between coats then finish up with four or five coats of B.C. Tru-oil the same way, this will give a soft satin finish.
