Yes, I would disguise the contents of the box as much as possible. Maybe even remove the barrel to make the package shorter.

does a crate for a rifle have to be rectangular or can it taper at one end?
No it does not, however the fatter side is what you pay for (the whole length) ! Also it is a real killer shipping a Kibler (special) extra long penalty/ total weight 26Lbs (crated)with insurance at UPS. My 45 SMR was $120.00 plus $40.00 for material (crate) at Home Depot ! Takes all the fun out of selling/Ed

Personally, I would not squish one end down.

That big rectangular end is a bit of safety factor if it takes a knock. Kind of like a crumple zone.

With it squished down a knock will impact the gun itself.

Just food for thought.

Last I received, couple years ago,,,,,,,,,,,, was labelled "Garden Art". I hate lying to these pickelhaubes at the uspo as much as i hate the need to be
sub rosa about our packages. But if you are honest about contents they may well disappear.

All they require of me at the USPS is whether or not there is anything liquid dangerous or perishable in the package. S d I do separate the barrel to make the package shorter. That length will cost you

Depends on the rifle. A full stock won't be any shorter without a barrel, and the wood won't be reinforced.. I do remove the lock to keep the frizzen from hitting the side and breaking. I buy luan paneling at Lowes along with a couple of 2x6s to make a box. They will cut the paneling for you. Might even rip the boards. The cost is about $40.

The wood won't be reinforced, but it also won't be taking the full stress from the barrel's weight when (not if) the package gets tossed around.

Yep! That's why If I sell mine I'll have to charge 200 for building a 4-inch thick crate to try & make it monkey-proof!!

I bought a long percussion rifle online a year or so ago. Got lost somewhere in transit for 2 months, PO could not find. I got a refund, then one day it showed up on my porch, heavy double cardboard box beat all to heck and creased, but amazingly, rifle was fine inside. Called seller to pay him again.

That's the problem! A person almost has to build an iron-clad container to ship with or risk a destroyed firearm! this is why I've not advertised mine on this wonderful forum for fear of loss or destruction by shippers!
I'll run it locally for a while. GOOD LUCK WITH ALL YOUR ENDEAVORS!!

A long rifle packaged up is going to look like a rifle even if you put a pink skirt on it. I use click and ship from the USPS. A pick up is scheduled and I don't have to deal with some know it all at the PO. I've used straight, squished, squashed, tapered with no problem. Just make sure the packaging is secure.
