Here's my first attemp at making a pair of shoepacks. The Frontier Rifleman shows this style and dates them Pre-Revolution.

Very Nice Raynor. I've made a couple pair of them, they are much more comfortable to wear than center seams on rocky ground!

Unlike a center seam moccasin, the shoepack has a heavier grade leather sewn on as a sole. In the pic you can see how the sides are sewn around the edge of the sole.

Forgive my ignorance, I am really only familiar with turn shoes of a far earlier time period. What are you referring to with the comment on the center seams?

There is nothing to forgive, everyone is here to learn. You can read all about center seam mocs here; http://www.southeasterntrading.com/southernindiandepartment/mocpattern.htm

I have been wearing shoepacks while hunting and trekking in the Ozark hill country for many years.

I prefer to make double soles of the heaviest leather I can find, with a piece of heavily oiled canvas between the two layers.

The soles are sewn on with two separate lines of stitching. One line of stitching retains the top sole, and an outer line of stitching, through the upper and the top sole secures the oil cloth and the bottom sole.

When the bottom sole needs replacing, only one line of stitching, and only one sole, needs to be removed.

I like the double sole idea. What's the purpose of the canvas between the leather? Waterproofing? :)

Yes, the oil cloth provides a water proofing so's dew or rain won't soak through the soles of your mocs.

Mark Baker wrote an article about making shoe packs in an 1990 issue of Muzzleloader Mag. He also demostrated making winter shoepacks on one of his videos too. Unfortunately, I don't remember which one.

Well done Raynor!

I plan on trying a pair myself as soon as I get a few other things finished up.
