Shooting a 1863 Tom Nixon Springfield in NSSA

Hey Guys,

Does anyone here have experience shooting the above rifle? It's a three band springfield built by Tom Nixon. I understand it has a Hoyt barrel on it. What minie bullet mold do you recomend?

I shoot BPCP and I know its a different game but I cast my bullets to the size of the bore and my sizing die is really just lubing them.

This will be my first year shooting NSSA and I am a competitive shooter in other types of shooting sports but this will be a first for me.

I'm not an NSSA member, but I do shoot alot of Rifle-Musket. I think I'd be looking at either one of the RCBS or Lyman NSSA Minie Moulds. RCBS makes theirs in two or three oversize diameters & Lyman seems to make the one. I would then size the one you chose to be .002" under your musket's BORE diameter.

That should be one sweet shooting musket. I have an original '41 Mississippi in .58 that was relined by Bob Hoyt. It mikes .577.

Billy I use 42 gr fff a Rapine 575510 sized .002 under bore size in both mine and my wifes muskets in Nssa comp. You will probally find a good load in the 40 to 45 grain range.
