Greeting,

I'm new to percussion shotgunning and was wondering about using some sort of buffer in addition to my paper shot cup?

Bone meal, PSB or ?

Any ideas or experiences would be greatly appreciated; GREAT discussions on paper shot cups!

In addition, I was curious as to when one increases the paylaad WHY does the blackpowder charge get increased too. This is backwards from any smokeless powder laods.

Thanks,

I used cornmeal with great results when I needed a buffered shot, cream-o-wheat will work too...

First off, black powder is NOT smokeless, they are two different formulas, I noticed that too when I made the transition from smokeless to black...

Smokeless powder is a nitro-based powder and yields higher pressures than black powder...

As for increased payloads/increased powder, that depends on how you intend to hunt, more powder will give you a wider shot pattern, less powder will give you a thicker shot cloud...

Caywood has a blurb about using meal for corn muffins instead of corn meal itself. Their technique is to push the shot into the bore far enough to equal the height of the shot column. Pour in the muffin meal and tap the side of the muzzle until the meal settles into the shot and basically disappeares. Then all you have to do is put on the over-shot card and ram down the whold charge. Good luck.

Muzzleloaders were developed to free prople from the restrictions of a certain size cartridge.

With a smooth m/l, you can duplicate the 12 ga in a 20 by just adding more components. Though, the shot column gets longer and stringing is a problem. I start with the lead I want to throw and then adjust the powder until I'm happy with the spread vs. velocity.

More powder,
Less lead.
Close in,
Wide spread.

Less powder,
More lead.
Shoots far,
Kills dead.
