Took the smoothbore out today to try out some different size balls and patching. It is a .62 cal/ .20 ga. I fired 5 shots with .600 rd balls over 80gr of Goex 3f, an overpowder wad, 1/2 a lubed fiber cushion wad, and a ball patched with the same cotton flannel i use for cleaning. This stuff is pretty thin, but with the wads under it it worked fine. Then i tried it with the same load but used .535 (.54 cal) rd balls patched with thick blue jean Denim. They worked good to. Not quite as good a group as the .600's, but good enough for hunting, about 4". This was with my elbows resting on the hood of my Bronco. These smoothbore are really Very Versatile. I now have 70 shots on this flint and it is still in good shape. This is only the second flint i have used since i got the gun. This large Siler lock is a good one.

You should try some paper cartridges with those .600 balls also, fast reloads.

Smoothbores are great fun!

I am too afraid of starting a fire to use paper patching. Besides, i don't need fast reloads. I am just target shooting and even if i was hunting, if i miss with the first shot, or worse yet, don't miss but hit and not drop what i'm shooting at, i can't reload fast enough with any combo to get off a second shot before the game is gone. So i just take my time and then track if need be. So far though i have never had to track one very far. Most have dropped within sight. But the smoothbore is fun.

Took it out again today and did some offhand practice. Boy i love this Large Siler lock. The gun fires so fast that even i don't have enough time to flinch bad. And i am on 85 shots with the same BEF and haven't even had to knapp it yet. I think i will knapp it just enough to redo the edge before going out again. I also tried TOW for cleaning for the first time today. That stuff works real good. Soak the barrel with the vent plugged and water poured in while i cleaned the lock and lubed it. Then run the rod with the TOW worm and TOW down the bore a couple of times. A couple dry patches and 1 with WD-40 and it is nice and clean and ready to go again.

Wish I'd have had the cash to pick it up from ya' pard but at this point in time I've got way too many bills that need catchin' up on. Sounds like one sweet gun, I still need to shoot my Cumberland Fowler, maybe next weekend if I get the time.
