Nice pistol you're a good craftsman. I have fired a few .315 balls from my smooth bored New Orleans Ace and was able to hit the target well out to about 6 to 9 feet from the target. Course three balls from the Ace won't put a hurt on a bad guy like ten from your pistol but it was fun to experiment.

 You seem like an ol pro and thanks for your reply. I tried my initial testing at 7 yards or 21 ft. Results were a bit better from 4 yards. Ill do a buck and ball video soon and post it

I have shot several smoothbore pistols through the years and have gotten similar results. Some I've poured the balls in and some I've pre-checked to make three in each layer, like buckshot loads. Both gave similar results and as you can see, it's a pretty much an "across a card table" proposition! Well, maybe a couple tables! :haha: Good luck and have fun!

I'd be curios if your pattern would be tighter with the addition of a home made shot cup made of a couple wraps of bond paper holding the shot together between the wads. Mike D.

I could almost guarantee that some sort of shot cup would hold the balls together for a better pattern but it's still a short range proposition with low velocity from a pistol's barrel length.

Tell us about the pistol. What bore, what charge ? I have a 24 & 16 bore pistol, 10" bbl. "snake charmers" they throw a nice pattern @ 5 yd. with #7 shot. 35 gr in 24 & 50 gr in 16. I'll try some buckshot next time I'm out. Nice work on that stubby....Tom

Anybody else use shot in their pistols?

I never have but I believe I could use it in at least two of my Scottish pistols. It is my belief that shot was frequently used in Scotland in the 17th & 18th centuries, along with whatever else they may have had. There is one account of a trial in Edinburgh in 1674 where a witness testified that he saw a pistol at the scene of the crime and that the pistol was later unloaded and found to have three balls in the barrel. Don't know if that was buck shot, bullets or small shot. In another incident a Covenanter shot a soldier with a piece of clay pipe in his pistol. In that time and place, using those particular weapons, a hit was much more likely with shot than a single ball. I laugh every time I watch Rob Roy and see Liam Neeson drop the dragoon with one shot from his Indian made Murdoch from a pretty good distance. Highly unlikely to happen.

The gun barrel is 6 inches and I was using .319 lead balls. 10 of them at a time. Its one of my handmade creations. 62 caliber smoothbore.

Not a bad group with that big round ball. Add the buck shot and you have a real thumper, might even get the bad guys partner.

Yep. The 60 cal ball by itself weighs around 320 grains. Add on top of that 6 50 grain .319 balls and thats 620 grains of lead comin your way! Who needs a fancy 500 mag?

Can you imagine what the ER room crew would think if some low-life showed up with those kind of wounds??!!!
