I need to buy 12 gauge accessories. I saw the Howdah and shotgun kit, but I just want to buy everything separetly. What do I need for an SxS? What is this stuff that comes with the kit? I know about the capper, flask, wrench, and shot and powder measure.

Quote:
Kit includes plastic powder flask, palm saver, Colt® pattern straight line capper, powder and shot volume measurer, patch and cushion wad puller, double-ended brass screw and alloy-steel T-nipple wrench.

All you have to do to unload it is pop out the over-shot card(s), pour out the shot, snag the over-powder wad/cards and pull out, and then pour out the powder. All after removing the percussion cap first.
A quick swab to clean out the powder residue will finish the process.

It's much more fun to shoot it out.

The wad/patch pullers are used to snag the card, wad or patch.

I would add to the shotgun kit a (preferably brass) working rod threaded to accept the jag and wad puller that come in the kit. Either that or you need to have the working rod threaded for 10-32 shotgun tip, cleaning jag and wad/patch puller. Of course you will need 10-32 12 gauge tips and pullers. The plastic flask will work but isn't one that will last.

Measure your bore before ordering tips as a side by side may be choked and need a smaller diameter tip. Mops that thread onto your rod are good for cleaning.

What site contains the supplier's description of the contents?

Cabellas had the description. Gun is choked modified and full, can you point me in the direction of the rod puller and tips? I already bought a 12 gauge cleaning kit with a rod for patch pulling for cleaning, and a cleaning bristle brush. I wonder if it will accept what you are talking about. If you could point me in the right direction that would help. Unfortunately I am away from the kit at the moment.

If Cabelas is selling the Pedersoli shotgun and Howdah cleaning kit, you have most of the parts to take care of your shotgun. I don't see the rod tip in the kit for loading the wads and cards. That should come with the shotgun. You will want a separate shot gun tip for your working rod. $89 is a lot to pay for that kit, but then I am known to be quite frugal.

The double screw is a threaded screw converter to convert metric threads on a Pedersoli rod to USA standard threads.

You need to know the thread size on your rod to be able to determine what you will need to order. Your rod could have the standard shotgun threads or the 10-32 or 8=32 threads. I won't try to guess.

Most of us have used sites such as Track of the Wolf, Muzzle Loader Builder's Supply, October Country and a host of other fine suppliers for the accessories you will need.

Go ahead and order catalogs from these suppliers. You will find far more items in these catalogs than you ever know that you will need.

I have the Dixie Gun Works catalog I can study. I'm still a little confused about what I need for a shotgun.

If you don't already have one, get an adjustable powder measure that can measure up to 120 grains of powder.

You won't be loading that much powder but having something a bit larger won't hurt.

You will most likely be using the same powder measure set at some amount like 85 grains to measure both the powder and the amount of shot for each load. (Some folks say a 1 to 1 volume of powder to shot makes a good load in a shotgun.)

You'll need a worm of some sort to pull wads and cleaning patches you've lost down the bore.
(Something like the 1817 two point worm can work.)

A "bore mop" or similar article can be used with cleaning patches to clean the bores.

A 12 guage cleaning jag also works fine with a cleaning patch to clean with plus it can work for loading thin over powder or over shot wads.

That's about all you really need to use your shotgun.

Sure you can buy more but most of the "more stuff" won't get used much.

Perfect! Thanks a lot. One question (regarding the shotgun kit on Cabelas), what is a palm saver and do I need one?

Thanks!

I'm trying to get into your pocket a little bit, but about the handiest device around for lots of shots from a shotgun is a shot flask (or snake) with an Irish head. No fiddling and no fuss, and darned little if any spilled shot. This is an example of what I'm talking about. You can save lots of money by buying the Irish head yourself and making one, or slap cash and buy one already made. Either way, it will sure come in handy on hunts with a fair bit of shooting.

Not mandadtory by any means, but high on the "nice to have" list.

Yikes $92, looks amazing but I'll have to put that on my wishlist! Thanks for the tip.

The palm saver fits over the end of the ramrod during loading so that you are not placing your palm over the 3/8" diameter ramrod.

I'll probably buy that.

Shot n powder flasks are a MUST if yer gonna shoot ALOT. At the range its cool to pour in measures but in the field its SOO much quicker to push a lever and withdraw yer charge and load and shoot the next critter that hopps, swoops or sneaks by!

Good point Brown bear

What I was thinking about was a powder horn and then the shot flask if I can afford it. I'm going to check Cabellas as you mentioned.

Of course, if you have a hobby shop or a store that sells wood nearby, you could buy yourself a 1", 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" wooden ball, a 3/8" drill bit with a 1/4" shank on it and drill a hole half way thru the ball.

Then, you'd have your palm saver + the satisfaction of knowing you made it yourself.
