Made from Caragana arborescens, next to a third generation (Italian) Colt's Patent flask:

The piece yielded just enough for two halves:

The center had decayed but the remainder was sound; the growth rings are much closer than they appear and the wood is dense. A small gouge was used to carve the interior of each half before joining:

The ends were stayed with salvaged copper wire and brass nuts made from scrap, threaded 8-32:

Scrap copper pipe for the spout was cut, flattened, annealed, then formed on a tapered mandrel:

The flask body was brought to shape and its ends banded; more scrap copper could then be fitted for the endcaps:

The body finish is as the paring chisel left it, burnished with bone and beeswax. Note the tearout left as a testament to the maddeningly difficult grain in this wood:
