I made a side plate today out of 1/16" brass for my Isaac haines style rifle, I did not have any 1/8" brass on hand. Would it be totally wrong to inlet this flush with the wood? thanks, flinch

IMO, inletting it so it ends up flush with the wood is totally acceptable.

Just don't put a chamfer on the edge or, if you do, lower the wood around the inlay so the edge of the chamfer ends up below the adjacent wood.

A contrary opinion,...buy a small piece online or locally. Make it right. Shape it, bevel it, inlet to the bevel.

I agree w/ Dane.....a 1/8" thick brass sideplate w/ a bevel looks a lot better......Fred

Or get some solder and double the thickness by joining two 1\16ths thick pieces together? If your careful and get get a solid joint.. then you can shape it as you please? And with a bit of thought, you could plan\sculpt the plate by altering how the outer plate is cut??

Not everyone's cup of tea, but a possible solution?

Btw,
My brass box framed UH receiver came to me as a solid slab of brass... No one has noticed the two added on pieces

Thanks, I did make another one out of 1/8" brass, just have to get the right shape now. Thanks for the picture, that is what I am after. flinch

To make a sideplate that "fits" the panel....clamp the oversize brass plate onto the panel and using the lockbolt holes, centerpunch the brass. This is done by grinding points on the shank end of the clearance drills used, inserting the drills into the holes and w/ a mallet hitting the drills.

From the rear center punch draw the rear tail of the sideplate so it centers on the beavertail end. The front part of the sideplate is simpler because you're working w/ both center punches.....draw a design between the 2 center punches. I use a dividers to draw the circles for both holes.....make sure the dias are larger than the lockbolt heads.

When the design is finished, drill the 2 holes. The sideplate shown is for a Bucks County, but shows the importance of centering the "tail" at the beavertail....Fred
