In thinking about doing my first build starting with a kit but I am intrigued by the sidestepper lock. How hard would it be for a novice to adjust a kit to fit the track the wolf sideslapper lock?

I do not have first hand experience with a sideslapper, or Mule ear. Track (phone call) tells me that either a single or a set trigger will trip the lock. Two big questions you need to confirm yourself....Does the wood prep in the stock ( you said kit) match the sideslapper configuration? Second question...... Will the lock prep (provided it fits the sideslapper) be correctly located in relation to the correct nipple placement? The nipple needs to be right in front of the breech plug face. If either question is a no, you better forget the sideslapper.
Good luck and keep us posted

I built a mule ear rifle. The only side slaper readily available is the L&R lock. The lock plate is interchangeable with a L&R's Durs Egg Flintlock, requires

some minor tweeking. Your best bet is to order your stock without the lock inlet and do the lock inleting yourself. The rifle I built is a Vincent half stock and the lock plate was too long so I had to shorten it a little which was fairly easy. Bottom line, if the stock is preinletted for anything other than a Dures Egg it wont work. Picture of my .36 cal mule ear squirrel buster.
