I will be hunting with a Lyman 54 cal using PRB w/iron sights on deer this fall. I'm thinking of sighting it in at 50 yds. Is this a good starting distance for PRB of that caliber?

Thanks,
Mike

I sight mine in 2" high at 50 yards. That's just a fraction of an inch high at 25 and on again at about 80 yards (will depend on your load, could be 75 to 90 depending on the muzzle velocity).

That gives a point-blank range of about 100 yards and allows me to hold center-chest on a deer without having to think about hold over or under.

I sight in all my ML's at 50yds as I hunt in thick woods where the typical shot is 30-60yds...and know that it's still very close for the rare 75yd shot I might get down a logger's road or something.

Just in case, I also know it drops 3" at 100yds...but my longest open sight ML deer has only been 70yds.

Thanks for the input. I was pretty sure most of the shots for my PRB/experience would be 50 yds +/-. I have 2 wks to work up the load and practise with my ML, and hopefully in 2 wks, I'll have some meat for my freezer.

Thanks again,
Mike

As one possible reference load, I happen to use the load data in TC's owner's manual...in the case of my T/C .54cal / 1:66" RB barrel, I settled on the following:

90grs Goex 3F (or 110-120grns Goex 2F / or Pyrodex RS)
OxYoke wonderwad over powder
.018" pre-lubed pillow picking
Hornady (or Speer) .530's

Very accurate...and they either go down in their tracks or they fall within sight of the stand...an excellent load for me.

I've read other posts using the wonderwad. I also thought they were shooting shotguns and not PRB. Does that extra wad between the powder and ball make that much difference?

Mike

I'm with Stumpy on this, it is a pure same when you git a shot across a hollar, and you miss low. I got a bunch of them kinda shots around here, but generally can't see more'n 50 yards. Hittin' a deer within 2" of the sighted point is hardly a miss. :front:

Their main benefits are when used with strong loads...

They act as a firewall to prevent the effects of fire from damaging the patch, or melting the base of a conical...so accuracy remains good even with strong loads;

This improved 'sealing' effect reduces blowby so velocity is higher for a given powder charge;

They are impregnated with natural lube 1000 that is forced out of them by heat & pressure so they put more lube into the bore which reduces fouling;

I use them with every kind of high power hunting load be it PRB or conical......ie: I can shoot a max load of Goex 3F and see a shredded smoldering patch...then shoot that load again with a wonderwad and the patch will still look like new.

G'day roundball,

Would it be advisable to use Wonderwad in a GPR .54 80-100gr ffg load or fffg equivalent with Hornady ball & Wl patch?

Is there some concern about using a wonderwad in a GPR 54 cal?
Mike

I use an over powder wad in all my guns. That way I never have trouble with blown patches with high power loads.

If I'm understanding this right,if your patch is burnt, your charge is too hot. Wouldn't it still be as hot with a wonderwad?

Mike

I think the point in using the wonder wad is to be a barrier between the patched round ball and powder. A sacraficial barrier. I doubt it will be that hot to completely consume it though. They are relatively thick and saturated with lube.

There are many threads throughout various forums suggesting accuracy appears to increase with the powder, wonder wad, patch round ball combination.

Bottom line is try them out and see.

Apparently there appears to be a glitch and I double posted. That is the reason for this edit.
