What is the preferred way to have your rifle sighted in? I have mine dead on at 50 yards. So far this has worked out fine for the terrain I hunt in. I use roundball at around 1500f.p.s.

If it works fine for your terrain then i would say you have it right for you. Actually i sight mine in for 50 yds too as most of the deer i have shot have been under that range. No need to sight in for 100 yds if you are never going to take a 100 yd shot.

Hello,
I try to sight my rifles in at 75 yards but thats just me. Not getting into the Ps and Qs about balistics I will say this. You need to know where that rilfe and load hits. You know where it hits at 50. You also need to know where it hits at 75 at 100 at 25 and so on. This allows you to make aiming adjustments in the field. If you are on your stand and Mr Buck shows himself at 80yds you know you need to aim a tad high. In the area I hunt in I'm limited to about 50-75 yards mostly. Longer shots are possible at some places. You haft to ask yourself,What is the longest shot I will take if old Mossy Antlers shows himself broadside? 125? if so You need to know where it hits at 125. Your rifle may not be sighted in at 125 but if you know where it hits and how to aim it,it might as well be. You also need to know the distance youre shooting. Judging distance in the woods is a skill all to itself.

Most ML gun if sighted in at 90-100 yds will hit either a bit high or low from the barrel out to the point of zeroing in, which will allow a "same POA" at any distance betwix end of the barrel and the sighted in distance and still put the ball in the kill zone.

I sight my M/L rifles to be about 2 or 2-1/2" high at 50 yards. That puts them on at 25 yards and on again at 75 or 80, and just a few inches low at 100 yards. That way, I can aim at the center of a deer's chest and hit vitals from any distance between the muzzle and 100 yards (point-blank distance), and aim high on the ribs and still be in at 120 yards (all out max range).
