Sights for competion

What sights do people use on percussion rifles when shooting competion?

Would a globe front sight be allowed when used with an open rear sight? The reason I am asking is I have a Lyman 57 SML on the TC Hawken presently, but can push the button and pull the top of the peep off very easy. I have a square notch TC rear that I can put on the GM barrel and just use a small square front sight in the Globe.

Your desired combination is allowed and is what I use, Lyman Globe and T/C square rear on a GM barrel.

Check the rules beforehand at a competition.
Many, maybe most, clubs follow NMLRA rules. Sights allowed vary with matches within a shoot program. There is no pat answer to your question.
My club, being mostly older shooters, does allow peeps for all matches but we are an exception.
The only rule is to check the rules.

As stated different clubs have different rules. I find that an Ivory frint sight and open rear sight is accepted at all places I have shot. Some allow "shaders" on front sights, some allow peeps, but many insist on open "traditional " sights. :idunno:

Had some spare time yesterday, put the TC rear sight with the square notch in it on the GM 40 Barrel. Played around with different sizes of front post and found on I like. Will have to contact NMLRA and see if I can get a copy of the rules book.

I have my own rifle range in the back yard, so most of my shooting is done there. Pretty good range all the way out to 300 yards starting at 25. Got two shooting benches and a loading table and a 6x8 target shack. I still shoot some NRA High Power matches each year, but have stopped shooting NRA pistol matches.

My friends and I have been just shooting for our own pleasure and getting ready for hunting.

Late to the party! The state club that I shoot at allows any iron sighted rifle as long as it's shooting patch ball. This, I'm sure, is to encourage as many people to attend as possible. Also, that same club hosts the state shoot and when doing so they follow NMLRA rules. I would expect to find many club and local matches with a myriad of rules to suit their congregations. I was a member at my state club (can't now because of clinicals) and shot my -ANY METALLIC SIGHT- rifle, witch has aperture sights.

The tips and interior of buckhorn sights must pass a 1/4" gauge. Rear sights on rifles must be six inches (6") or more in front of the rear of the barrel. Certain special matches may permit specific exemptions to the general rules; such exemptions will be defined in the rules for those certain special matches. The “sealing” of adjustable sights with substances such as wax, lead, or tape to render them “fixed” is not permitted. Smoothbore: no rear sight above the plane of the barrel.
Front sight color shall be black, white, or a natural metallic color such as brass, silver, gold, or iron.

As others have said, it's best to get your info from the specific venue you plan on attending.

The rear sight in your post looks like a Lyman, but I have not see the target adjustment knob like that before. Where did you get it? Can you provide more info regarding that rear sight?

Thanks for the info you provided. Slowly the picture is coming together. Not sure how much match shooting I will or will not do in the future. However this is a very interesting thread and greatly appreicate all of you who have taken the time to provide info.

The rear sight is actually two sights that I combined into one. The base and mount are a Lyman 57GPR and the armature is from a Lyman 90MJT. I wanted a click finger adjustments.
