When? what type? this makes a difference with many gun related questions.I would think no rear sights with early smoothbore pistols , likely later rifled barrels would have sights, with acceptions, I think I saw some 17th 18th century high end art pistols from France with smoothbores and rear sights in Lenks book on European flintlocks. One of our resident gun Gurus will likely shed some more light ion the topic.

I have a Traditions Kentucky built from a kit. 10x accuracy at 50 yards. So I would say yes, sights are accurate on a pistol, taken in consideration of above mentioned factors. -Oh, and I am by no means one of the "Gurus" here.

On a smoothbore flint pistol no. On a Pedersoli LePage yep. Everything else is in between.

given a repeatable sight picture and doing things the same way time and again, yes. They can be accurate.
For me, shooting in the low to mid 90's with an occasional 10x, at 35 yds is accurate for me with a .50 and a mild load. The trigger and your grip has a lot to do with it, that and lots of trigger time!

That Ruger old army at the top of this thread...well, they dont get much better than that out of the box!

of course, it comes down to what you consider accurate!
(I know of some folks who are thrilled to no end to just hit the target! all 18x18 inches of it!)

front stuffer single shots, production made...the Lyman and the traditions trapper are fairly good guns!

Of course sights make a huge difference in accuracy. And it depends on the type of pistol just how accurately it will shoot. If you have a target quality pistol with no sights, just consider how much better it will shoot by putting those sights on. If you have a short barreled smoothbore pistol, or even a rifled barrel pistol with a short barrel, then no, sights will probably not make a significant improvement in accuracy, but they will help to an extent.
