i think i have decided to buy the armstrong kit from pecatonica i see the lock they recomend is the large siler lock but i have read that the deluxe siler is suposed to be faster has anyone compared the two and is there any noticeable differance and is it worth the extra money. also i see mr. chambers offers a golden age lock i am wondering witch lock would be the most appropriate for this gun. this is my first build i realize it probably will have a lot of mistakes and it will not be a perfect recreation of an armstrong gun but would like to give it my best try and with the help of the fine peaple on this forum i think it will be a lot of fun.

there deluxe siler is there siler all polished ans smoothed out to work faster....fer the 10.00 bucks extra from chambers website fer the deluxe thats where my money went........bob

I agree with Bob... pay the extra $10 and get the Deluxe Siler.

Are you going to chronicle your build here? I'm seriously considering building an Armstrong for my first rifle, and would love to see pics/stories of your progression!

The large Siler & the Deluxe Siler and Golden Age locks are not the same lock.

The large Siler from Jim Chambers is a wonderful lock & will be a great sparker, I have used LOTS of them with no problems. He is the Best all around Lock supplier & I am confident in his product.

The Deluxe Siler is a imporved version of the large Siler, with same side plate as the large Siler, different cock (taller) and different mainspring & different tumbler, different geomerty concerning how the flint hits the frizzen, etc. This baby will burn the house down with sparks, tho a little harder on flints than the large Siler as it hits the frizzen harder.

THe Golden Age lock is a slightly longer lockplate, slightly slimmer lockplate than the above 2, but same guts as the Deluxe Siler, so it also is a hard hitting lock, real sparker, but a slimmer look than the Large or Deluxe Siler.

ALL are superb locks. Large Siler & Deluxe Siler are interchamgable......... the Golden Age lock is not, as the lockplate is slimmer & longer.

If the stock on the Kit you are going to buy has a lock inlet cut in, you must know what lock it is for, as if it is Close for a large or Delux siler, it will be too wide for a Golden Age lock.

At least this is myidea of all of it.. :results:

BD6 is exacly right. The large siler and golden age locks are two different animals and will not fit the same mortice. The DELUXE siler, is a large siler lock with the golden age cock, frizzen spring and tumbler.

bob1961 i seen the pics of your lock nice looking lock

staticxdood first i have to finish my workshop putting up toung and groove ash paneling improving work bench and shelving then start rifle late summer or fall plan on asking lots of questions and posting pics still dont know how to do that yet maybe we can do this together via the forum.

birddog6 i understand the large siler and thedeluxe have the same mortice and the golden age is longer and slimmer but would see if they could inlet a differant lock or i would do it myself my question is witch lock is more appropriate. thanks for the warning thats what i like about this forum every body willing to help.

If you can e-mail pictures you take, and need help posting them, let me know via PM. I'll be more than glad to help you in that area. I can even host 'em for you if you need me to.

I would say the large Siler is the appropriate lock for the rifle, however I will also say that 90% or more of the people looking at the 3 of them on a rifle can't tell the difference. Someone that studies rifles & locks & knows them would see it, as some on here would.

Were it me if I was going to hunt with it I would put on the Deluxe & if I was going to use it for general target I would put the larger Siler on it. However either one I usued I would buy from Jim Chamber Flintlocks.
