I was introduced to the sippin form of apple pie at a rondezvous and now admit that I'm a fan. Have made some from a recipe found here on the forum that was a hit with my ML buddies and their wives. But I'm curious about the history of this beverage. Was it a common drink at rondezvous? GW

don't quote me but I sorta doubt it very much, I'm guessing it was developed in the last 30 or so years by some curious mixologist hee hee. hmmm lets try this n this together n see how it tastes. Reason I figure its modern is most recipies call for useing those cinamon candies for part of the flavor ingredients.Got to admit though it's some great stuff when made right n I'd bet them ol mountain runners woulda liked it if they would a had a taste

The books say the Sutlers sold watered down whiskey at the big rendezvous. Of course if you had drunk nothing but water the previous 11-2/3 months then watered whiskey would be plenty good enough. There was sugar for sale at Rendezous and probably some hard candy and I assume some spices so some assembled drinks similar to Apple Pie may have been available, but I have never seen anything in writing. There are some old drink recipes that warrant exploring. I don't doubt that someone with an eye to profit was providing high priced drinks, but I haven't seen that in the books. That could have just been called watering the whiskey.

Is this the old, "it could have happened" philosophy used to justfy a modern practice?

There are plenty of recipes for hard apple cider or apple jack. You don't find much information for anything like Apple Pie.

Now "shrub" is a different topic altogether. That is a fruit cordial, often lemon, mixed with strong wine or rum or brandy and sugar.

Do a search for shrub in the archives.
