I was browsing over at sitting fox and noticed his prices are a good 1-200 cheaper than most other places. Seams he uses same locks, barrels and everything else. The only thing that I would see that he gets different or /makes are the stocks.

For example sitting fox is advertising a lancaster kit for 499 grade 4 maple stock included. Another place is saying 480 plus stock price

What the deal? Are these good kits or what?

All I can say is ya get what ya pay for...... Also keep in mind what one guy considers good, could be very questionable to another man....... :hmm:

I guarantee ya you take a cheap kit & put it beside a high $ kit & you Will see a definate difference. In Wood, Barrel, Lock, and all of the component parts. The high dollar one will have the best of the best, the cheap on will have the cheapest the guy could buy at the time..... And the end product will normally show this as well....

Now, if you are a guy that can build anything with nothing, really won't matter except you can't put natural class into a piece of wood.

However, if you are a new builder & want something real nice to show for your efforts, save a lil more & go with the best kit. When it is all over, you will be glad ya did & ya won't have all of those migraines....

If you are building a "throw in the back of the truck" beater sort of rifle, go with the elcheapo parts & hope the thing goes together right & you can build it.

When I look for parts, I always look for the best first, then I consider price. Experience of buying them has shown me who I can trust to get quality parts from & it has seldom been the cheapest guy....... there is a reason they are always cheaper..... and it is not because they just like you or are doing you a favor......

Ray will work with you on specific parts for your kit. You specify a certain barrel and level of curl in a stock and he'll get it for you. For the most part the guns on the web site are entry level. I assembled the Colonial Fowler kit this last summer and have found it to be a good reliable gun. I was surprised by receiving a stock with almost 50% curl on an entry level kit! One thing you will definitely change is the tang screw. His tang screw is a wood screw. Get one that'll thread into the trigger plate. Would I go with his kits again? Sure.

At that price you're going to get a piece of crapola for a piece of wood, it's going to be soft.
It doesn't matter how much curl the piece of wood has, if it's soft it isn't going to turn into a well built gun. It's difficult to inlet parts into soft wood, it always stays fuzzy when you finish it and it isn't nearly as strong. You always get what you pay for.

You always get what you pay for.

Not to be picky, but one never gets more than you pay for but ya sure can get less than ya paid for. :haha:

AKsmoker, notice that our member mike brooks also has some kits for sale.

And again, ya get what ya pay for.......
It's shipping that kills me. I like to hand select good hard pieces of wood with some character in them. Shipping them to my stock shaper and sending them back again is $50.00 worth of shipping. Not to mention another $25 if I have to get blanks shipped to me. I can't compete with Pecatonica, track of the wolf Chambers, etc. after that $50 or more added expense of shipping so I don't worry about it and just stick to high quality wood , which is more expensive too. Loose loose situation I guess. :youcrazy: When I started dabbling in kits I designed them so they would be easy for ME to assemble and in doing so save alot of wear and tear on my worn out old body. I figured if anyone else wanted to buy them that would be a bonus. So far they have worked out well for me as well as others.

Mike, same way here.. shipping today REALLY makes a difference. That is why when I go to Friendshp I will buy 4-12 stock blanks & haul them home with me. I don't build kits but I have a lot of blanks & barrels......... they ain't gettin any cheaper, so I am buying them like everything else, hand picking the stuff & buying in bulk...... Those $200 blanks will be $400 in 5 years if things keep going like they are. :shocked2: Anymore, I don't buy anything less than a Grade #6 & try to buy all 7's if they look worthy of the price.

Yes, used to send a blank & barrel to a guy & have the barrel inlet & butt shaped & cost ya $12. each way.... Boy those days are gone......
I just had my Empty rifle crate shipped back to me & I see a $ 25.83 price sticker on the crate. EMPTY ! :shake:

Yep, cost of doing business is incredible. How these outfits like sitting fox make any profit is beyond me. Corners have to be cut somewhere if product prices are that cheap.

I've been shopping around and I found Sitting Fox to be by far the most helpful, so they get my business. I ordered a .54 smooth rifle Penn style for a starter kit. I'm not looking for some fancy safe queen or ornate tiger stripes on the stock. I'll report back when I get the beast together.
