Skychiefs load in small bore smoothy

Asking this of Britsmoothy or anyone shooting 50 caliber or smaller smooth bore with shot. I like Skychiefsload. His load has shot better patterns in everything I tried them in. Curious about small smooth bores like 45 and 50. What are you shooting and any feed back? Do I need to get wads ready, LOL

Not speaking from experience, but the principals and dynamics should be the same as a larger bore. Should be as effective as an unmentionable 410 shotgun, if not better. Get the wads ready. I would certainly like to hear the results.

Not tried it as I don't use wads in my .45 but make a wad up with just a few cards.
In all honesty, if I got better patterns in my small bore I don't know how it would help me any more than now!
My .63" benefits a treat from a heavy wet wad up front though.

That is why I'm asking. My 28 gauge (.560) loves it, and larger bores do. Just curious about smaller bores.

Skychief found that if he loaded a 1/2" oil soaked cushion wad over the top of the shot instead of loading the typical card, the shot pattern produced by the gun was much more uniform and a much larger number of shot hit inside the pattern. In other words, it made a cylinder bore barrel shoot like it was choked.

Yes, where as Britsmoothy will go down in history synonymous with witches and heritics, stakes and burning, stools and dunking. Skychief will in the future be synonymous with the likes of Foster, Ackley and Hall & Oats.

Skychief stumbled on to his discovery very innocently and with dignity remained respectfully quiet while the rest of us debated how it worked, not that we needed to understand how it works, we just needed to accept that it works and go shoot.

I don't know how it works or why but it does. In fact will admit to the fact that I was totally convinced it would not or could not work. Shot it and saw it did. Tried out of several different gauges from 28 to 10 gauge, all with same results. Number 4 to number 9 shot all shot tighter 20 to 32 inch barrels, cylinder bore. I'm still amazed at it.

I was loading the skycheif load long ago. It was due to ignorance. Having never shot a BP shot gun when I got it and the over powder/over shot components I looked at em and deduced the thick one was the only one that could hold down the shot. Shot well. Now the wad wasnt as big as skychiefs and not soaked. That really works! I just didnt think that tiny lil thin card would ever hold the shot down

Zonie, thanks for the thread. Wow, this goes against what is normally preached. That is that the 1/2 inch wad should cause a donut hole pattern. I'm excited about this and I'm going to range next week to try it in my 52 caliber smoothbore.

A wet wad under the shot usually does produce a dough nut pattern but a wet wad on top of the shot has never been preached as causing dough nut patterns!
