There are a lot of photographs of these holsters but only the front is shown- I have had trouble finding photos of the back of ORIGINAL holsters. I want to know the shape of the belt loop and how is attached. All help appreciated.

Dave - you need to get you a copy of Packing Iron. it will answer 90% or better of your questions - used from $20.00 new for $29.00 http://www.amazon.com/Packing-Iron-Gunleather-Frontier-West/dp/0939549085

Here's one original -

an exacting copy by me of an original

On 80% of the 5K originals or so I have examined you will note the top of the loop sets just at the top of the cylinder - no flopping around when done right.

I've got some more pics of originals somewhere but with over 60K images it's some times hard to find the ones I want... :hmm:

Also check out auction sites such as Cowans, Butterfields, Greg Martin, HA, etc.

Second there was no absolute standard to the shape of the loop variations (mostly minor ) abound - for the following links I just put in Main & Winchester slim jim holster and voila.

a low loop - IMO bad design http://www.gunswithahistory.com/items/gunleather_002.html

and a whole bunch more - it's a mix of old and new but the old are generally easy to discern just from the pic or you can hoiver your mouse to see more info then click away as needed https://www.google.com/search?q=ma...n02QWEvsyfAw&ved=0CD4QsAQ4Cg&biw=1280&bih=569

Well it looks like if the top of the loop is about even with the trigger that you don't end up with a top heavy rig- which was my concern. The holster therefore needs to be designed so the gun rests fairly deep into it.
