Hello all:

In the six months that I have been a member of this forum I don't recall this being asked. So I did a "search" and was mired by many hits having nothing to do with a sling on a f/l.

So, do any of you folks, have, or plan to install, or have in the past, used a sling on your muzzleloader?? Perhaps any pro's and con's??

I like to keep my hands freed up for the hike in and, if I am successful with a kill it's nice not to have to carry the gun while trying to drag the deer out.

I don't like the looks of swivels or studs on a gun, so I use one of the slip-on variety for carrying the gun any time I'm not hunting and need my hands free. If I needed to feel PC, I'd probably make one of leather with a loop at the bottom to grab the stock below the trigger guard and a thong of some sort to lash it to the barrel somewhere. Be careful that the thong is not so bulky that it obstructs your lign of sight for unplanned quick shot opportunities while you happen to have the thong in place.

Take a look at an old thread: Last of the Mohicans

It starts with a question from Carver Locke
:hatsoff:

I have one that I finger-wove that is tied to my tradegun. It has brain-tan ends and ties, and ties around the stock/barrel over my ramrod pipe in the front, and is tied to my trigger guard in the rear. No swivels needed and can be easily removed. I use mine to free up my hands when doing other things (collecting firewood/water, dragging game etc). I don't particularly care if they are appropriate, they are very handy to have and are a "common sense" item. I will personally continue to use them on my guns.

BrownBear:
On my centerfire rifles I have the permanent stud and swivel slings. They are great for those guns.
I agree with you for my m/l. I want to stay away from the more permanent type and go with something I can use getting in and out of the woods and removing it in the interim.

Undertaker:
Thanks for the great link. I read the discussion and it has given me some ideas. I only have a week and a half til N.Y. opens so I may have to try and come up with somehing temporary.

Black Hand:

I agree, it seems like a very common sense item. Almost a necessity to me. Got any pics of it??Thanks

Thanks fella's, snagg

I have two or three on mine,I likem when I deer hunt. Non on the long rifles. Just the short ones. Squrril rifle, hawkens, and bobcats. Dilly

Historically slings are almost exclusively for muskets and German/Austrian sporting guns.

Don't know why, that's just the way it was

I put slings on all my own flintlocks, and on most of those I make for my customers.
I sling is very handy for hunting in steep country, and also for a way to carry the rifle when you have your game down, and you are dragging it back.
Here are a few pics.

It's the cheapo that Dixiegun sells. Not the nicest thing, but lets me use both hands.

I'd been considering adding a set of sling swivels (somehow), and a nice heavy leather sling as I'm always just a little nervous about it letting go.
