So again I am feeling an overwhelming urger to buy a .40. Who loves/hates/likes them? I have a .54, and a smoothie so I am not worried about big stuff. I don't really have a small bore rifle.

The .40 is a delightful caliber. Now that deer season is winding down I will change my Tennessee from .50 back to .40. The .40 is fun to shoot and offers light recoil and plenty of smack for medium sized game.

I really like my 40 cal SMR. Its the maximum caliber allowed in my state for the squirrel season when I will also hunt coyotes where shots can run to 100 yards....no issue with the 40. IMO, it’s fun to shoot, and very accurate.

Love my .40 . Use it in all but bear and deer season . Like it because it's very predictable and consistent. Its super lite , ugly , reliable , easy to load and can be throttled back for squirrels , etc.., and stoked up for larger work. Oh yes , did I mention it is very accurate??? Wish I would have had it when as a kid roamed the Cheat River country in Preston Co. , W.Va.. I'm sure the .40 would have liked being there , too......... oldwood

I love my .40. It's the minimize for deer in my state. So, I can legally hunt deer and small game at the same time. Granted, I would be hesitant to shoot a deer beyond 30-40 yards (such an opportunity has not happened yet), and head shots only for squirrels. But there is something liberating about know I could legally shoot anything season - as long as the shot is ethical.

I love my .40, but you should also consider the .36. Lot of good things going for it too.

I’m toying with a “smaller” flintlock than my one and only (.54) - for squirrel, maybe rabbit if I happen across one. I feel like a small rifle is more familiar to me than a smoothie, but I’m all over the place mentally on this!
