I was thinking maybe a patched .24 ball, a 3 ball stack, or some #9 over 15gr. Fff to start? Ive got a bunch of leftovers from other projects so it shouldn't cost much to try.

Just like a load of shot, I would use an over shot card.

To pop rats, I think the small sized shot and a light load would work just fine.

You have the materials to experiment and come back and tell us of the results.

I have a .27 smoothbore in the works. It has been shot but still has a lot of refining to go. Maybe pics sometime. .22 cal. Mossberg barrel, (recycled), home built lock, walnut stock.
Used a .22 cal brass as a measure, 2 3-F powder, wasp nest overpowder, 2- #7 1/2 shot pinch of wasp nest overshot.

Also, you think 2ft of barrel is enough or 3 ft?
I'm interested in this project, in process of getting everything together for a 32 smooth bore. Have found threads about 22 rimfire barrels being used as muzzleloader rifle barrels. So a smooth bore that small should be possible? With #9 and #12 shot on hand to play with in 32 caliber smooth bore will see what it does. I will do a barrel starting at between 24" and 30". Will test and cut an inch at a time to 20" or so. Have enough material to make barrel of whatever length works best.

Ill be interested to hear how it goes. I think im going to get a 3ft tube to start. I can always cut it down later.
I built a .32 caliber smooth bore handgun several years back to play with around the shop. At reasonable distance with #9 or #12 shot was great on rats, chipmunk size pest. Shot patched round ball well. Would load builders sand and shoot wood bees. Friend loved it and shot more than I did. That is one reason I want longer barrel 32 smooth bore. Also to compare to rifled 32 with ball.
