I’m looking for a piece of smoked brain tanned leather, not overly large. Perhaps enough for 5-6 medium sized sheaths. Could also be a couple smaller pieces. As it is for sheaths, it doesn’t need to be especially thick. Light to medium weight should be fine. Thinking around $100, ballpark, depending on the quantity and quality. Thanks!

Anyway, I would recommend that you check the Contemporary Longrifle Association (CLA) artisan's website. Several brain-tanners market their products there. I bought a smoked braintan deerskin from a fellow named Benner in Pennsylvania. This particular hide did not "break down" as soft as he liked, so he gave me a very good discount on it. However, it was perfect for my needs. Firm, with no "drape," yet nowhere near as stiff as rawhide, and the smoke gave it a really nice color.

I don't think the forum rules allow me to post a link to classifieds in another forum. You may be able to find the CLA artisans' website with a Google search. If not, send me a PM and I'll help you find it. I also corresponded with Mr. Benner by email, and I may be able to recover his email address so you can communicate with him directly.

I believe a hide like that would work well for knife sheaths. That sheath you showed with your Woodbury-style knife was very well done. I would like to see you make some more of those.

Thanks Notchy Bob! That’s a good suggestion. I’m a member of the CLA, but a newish one so I wouldn’t have known who to check with. I located the only Bender (Mark) in the Artisan directory and sent him an email.

The goal is indeed to make more knives and sheaths in that same style!

Thanks again - Jake

I made an error in my first post. The name of the tanner was "Benner," not "Bender." @jlutz has been advised by PM, and I edited the post.

I could try to blame it on Spell Check, but it was me...
