He shot out of the underbrush like a bullet and I quickly put the beagle on his trail. Soon, the beagle had him turned around and his baying grew louder and louder. I laid the hammers back on the double 12ga smokepole and smiled. I saw him dart through the underbrush at a full run and I swung through him and fired. Smoke filled the air and so did the rabbit, a clean miss! I followed him and fired the 2nd shot and had my first kill with this double-barrel, which I have named "Okie Smokie".

A few more jumps, but the rabbits kept going...

Then, my buddy jumped on the old roll or fencewire and I saw a rabbit trying to get out of it. "THERE HE IS" I yelled to my buddy and the rabbit was soon out and on the run. He started to run to the left where my buddy could shoot, but then zigged and went right. Smoke filled the air again and the rabbit lay still. The beagle was so pumped he ran right by him. We worked another hour and jumped a few more, to have them run completely off the place and out of ear shot!

"Lets go hit it by the neighbor's cornfield", I told my buddy and we headed that way. I was pushing through some brush when I saw weeds shake about 10 feet ahead. I told my buddy to get ready and soon another rabbit was on his way at full speed. We both fired on him and I fully expected to see him crumpled up in the mixed underbrush, but we both missed! The dog ran him for 15 min, then he holed up. On the way to recover the dog I spied a really good clump of loose briars. I eased into them and FFFWWWWWSHHSHHHS, a covey of quail burst up around me. I pulled up and fired at the first bird and it immediately crumpled. I locked on another bird as they quickly were headed out of range and fired...and it went down! I yelled as the smoke drifted across the briar flat and I heard my buddy yelling too. We recovered both quail and I reached to reload and found I didn't bring enough shot and was out!

I asked my buddy what he was shooting. and he handed me 2 20ga shells. I cut the top off and poured them down each barrel and we were soon on our way...

As we approached the last 50 yards of cover my buddy worked around a fallen tree...and I kicked a small clump he just passed and out ran a rabbit. I fired in self defense and the rabbit rolled with the load hitting him mainly in the head.

We missed several other rabbits and commented many times on how perfect the weather was, how beautiful the day was, except for the occasional cloud of smoke. :winking:

When my buddy send me the rest of the pics, I'll throw em' out here.
