My two English Shepherds found a racoon in the base of a big old hollow cedar today, and after a bloody battle it retreated up the inside of the tree. I've blocked off the entrance at the base but can't persuade the damn thing to come down so I can get a shot at it.
I could smoke him out but don't want a forest fire. I could sit for hours all night in minus 20 C waiting for him. Any better ideas?

When I was a kid (50 years ago), I burnt down a tree try'n to smoke a coon out.

"IT WORKED"!! .... but tha "big ol'cottonwood" tree burnt fer 2 days. (neighbor thot maybe lightning hit it,... and I played "dumb"!!)

Well...on the basis of "fair chase", you could chalk this one up as: Coon 1, Human 0

Thanks guys. Chainsaw in one hand, rifle in the other, tree going ballistic with a flare under it. Meanwhile Coon probably laughing from another tree. Maybe I'll just return to my target shooting.

Me and some buddies caught one on fire one nite also. We got the coon but was afraid to leave the tree with it smoldering and all. I never did do that again.

Rocklock,.... I never did it agin neither,.... the cows lost their only shade tree within 2 miles!! :haha:

Bee keepers use a smoker that is safe and contained...

You might wish to check your game laws in WV it's against the law to harass any animal in a den or den tree!

When I was a youngster I knew some guys who set the forest on fire more than once trying to chase squirrels out of hollow trees! I came along behind and could tell they had been there cause a tree would be smouldering.

I know a few tricks on how to get them out the fair chase way. But some people won't take the time to do it the proper way. Usually the legal way is not a sure thing and takes time and effort.

Also when I was a youngster my uncle and his old coon huntin' buddy knew how to get them out of a hollow tree.

First thing they would do is look for a sturdy log about 3 or 4 inches in diameter and 4 to 6 feet long. They would beat the hollow tree steadily for as long as it took to unnerve the coon.

It usally took 5 to 10 minutes but sure as sin the coon would climb out of that tree a snarlin' and growlin'. I'm sure it would work for most any animal in a hollow tree.

The other guy would be standing back with the light watching for the coon and shoot as soon as he cleared the hole.

That might be good to know if you're stranded in the woods and hungry in such a case the law be da*#$@!. I'm not saying this way is legal but!

:agree: It works sometimes but not all times but it's one of those fair chase things to try. Beating on a hollow tree is not legal in most cases.

The tree is on my land and the coon is varmint, so I'm OK legally in Ontario - though I certainly wouldn't want to harrass it unnecessarily. Anyway, having been all set to experiment with various techniques suggested here it now seems to have gone - the encounter with the dogs was too much for it. So we're scoping all the other hollow trees in the woods now (dozens of them) - not that I want to find it and take a shot at it, of course :winking:

Trap with a tasty bit of fish in it? Yep, did that before when we had one in the barn, then threw trap and coon the pond. But didn't like watching it drown (took a hell of a long time), so swore I'd try to shoot the next one.
