I seem to recall that there was a smoothbore being made by someone that was a copy of what was thought to be a trade gun found in digs in South Carolina maybe (1750s or 60s possibly. Any info appreciated - as to the name of the one from the digs and the one that someone was building.

Nothing wrong with asking about a trade gun.

A very interesting book about guns found in archeological digs is "COLONIAL FRONTIER GUNS" by T. M. Hamilton.

It not only covers some trade guns but a few other guns such as the Buccaneer with quite a few pictures.

It also has an extensive description of knapping flints as was originally done.

A library may have a copy available or may be able to get a copy using the loan system many of them have where one library will loan a book to another library for people to check out.
