Do you find that if your lubricated patches aren't used within a particular time, that they continue to soften and then tear more easily when seated or shot?

Some lubes can break down the patch material over a period of time.Cant speak for all the lubes because they aint all the same.I know that when i used to shoot the dry patch with water soulable oil that if i kept them much over a month they would burn to a crisp on the ground in front of me,had to stomp out sum of em.If i kept them fresh they wouldnt do it and were real acurate. If your talking about a prelubed patch of the store bought stuff cant help ya.If there turning brown or red it probably aint a good sign but i really dont know.Me no likem wax in the bore :haha:

I use the Ballistol/water lube for my patches. I usually make enough to last for about 3 months. I haven't had any issues with the patches softening or anything. I don't know about long term though.

I was using olive oil on cotton drill patches. Some of these are a month old now, and I'm noticing that they are starting to tear now, which they didn't seem to do when first lubed. I was just wondering if this was a common thing, and if patches continue to soften with age.

I lube with Bore Butter or my own beeswax/olive oil lube. I've never noticed any breakdown of the patch. I have some factory lubed patches fron T/C and Ox-Yoke that are pretty old and they are good as new.

Hey Buck...!

I use Dutch Schultz's dry lube system too. Get some felt WonderWads in the correct caliber and put one down over the powder and then the PRB. You won't be problemed with burning patches any more. Since I'm in the timber business I kinda would rather not have the woods on fire...unless I'm controlled or prescribed burning :winking:.
