Soften Bear Hide

I have a piece of bear hide from the bear I shot a couple of years ago. When the hide was tanned it became very stiff. I don't know what was used to tan the hide. The hide side is white and the hair is still on. Is there a good product to use to soften the hide, and not lose the hair? I have decided, finally, what I want to do with the hide, and would like it to be more pliable.

Who tanned it and what process did they use?

As stated in my post I don't know what was used. I have left a message for the taxidermist that I took it to, but have not as yet received a reply.
