I am replacing the front sight on a beat up fowler of mine. While waiting for the new sight i began to wonder how sights were attached during the golden years. I'm assuming that solder didnt exist in t he days of Schreyer and other gunsmiths. what methods did the employ?

Perhaps the question should be, "How was soldering done by the original masters?"
A hot iron was heated in the forge or some other heat source and used to melt the solder...

We had to do this in metal shop to seal a funnel and a bucket that we had shaped. Just used several large copper 'irons' shaped much like todays soldering irons but larger.

That's how we learned to solder in 8th grade metal shop. Back when metal shop was a required subject for boys and home economics was required for girls.

well i stand corrected. originally Meant that solder as we know it today probably wasnt used.... However , I see that yeah, its pretty much the same stuff for the most part.. minus the lead of course.
