Hi folks - I'm new here, just got a .50cal CVA Hawken percussion rifle and love it so far - my first blackpowder one. I introduced myself over on the "Welcome page and folks asked to see pics of my work in other primitive skills, so I posted a passel of 'em on these links, in folders:

http://photobucket.com/albums/y208/soquili/knives-scabbards-flintknapping/

Some info about the flint knives and beaded knife scabbards on that last link:
1.All beadwork and leatherwork on the scabbards was done by me, using my designs.
2.Both flag scabbard knives made by Robert White.
3.Small cross scabbard neck knife made by Jimmy Hood.
4.Buffalo track knife with snowflake obsidian inlay ("Mark's knife") made by me, blade by Leroy Jines.
5.Turqouise inlay knife with 4 spots ("Judith's knife") made by me, blade made by Mac Ellis.
6.Last knife with eagle feather made by Robert White, feather carved by me, turquoise inset by me.
7.Picture of flint-knapped obsidian, quartz, and fiberoptic blades (1st pic) all done by me. There are plenty of better knappers than me around, so that's why I usually use their blades in my knives. :)

Most all of these pieces are either sold, given away, or were custom orders, so none are for sale, sorry, just for "show and tell". :) But I hope you find them purty to look at. Looking forward to learning lots from y'all here!

Just dang, with some of that great bead work of yours, I must be sure and not let the wife see them, she could do some hurtful payback for all I have spent on possibles over the years.  ,

Wow, very pretty stuff. I know a least one other Cherokee on this board, also an artisan. Probably not a coincidence...

Regards, sse

Simply Marvelous !! :front: on the dragon head. Looks like you are a master of many skills. Good luck with your new hawken. With your talent me thinks one day you might even build your own rifle too!

So talented you are, and so beautiful your works..

And you pull a mean bow and arrow too... :D

BTW, how is your hand at quill work?

Very nice and glad to another "lady" in the group.
How long have you been doing this...?

Thanks, Gates. E-mail me off-list at [email protected] and I'll send ya directions on how to do that dragon's head for your blacksmith bud, it's easier than it looks. :)

On building my own rifle, I don't know...maybe I'll stick to beads, at least they don't blow up on ya if you make a mistake!!!

Awww shucks, thanks, y'all! (scuffling feet in dirt) Y'all are gonna make me blush! 'Tweren't nothin, really, just threw a few beads on some hides and sticks and stuff, hollered out a few gourds, bashed on some rocks, beat on some iron... :)

I forgot, I've done a little wood-carving too, here's a link to pics of two Northwest Coast style totem poles I carved on 18" diameter, 6' tall pine logs for a friend's living room a few years back, and me showing one of my horse memorial/effigy/dance sticks to a sweet kid in the class I did an NA demo for:

Thanks, Musketman, that's a bois d'arc bow, sinewed and prairie-rattlesnake-skin backed, made by Crawdaddy Tim Mayeaux from (where else?) Louisiana. Shoots good too!

Besides knife and hawk, I also throw atlatls, forgot to add that too, here's a pic of me showing some kids how it's done:

And here's my one and only try at quillwork, so far:
PH-myquilledwheel.jpg

That's the logo for the women's Rendezvous group that I'm in - the first thing you have to do is make that quilled medicine wheel. Folks say that's the hardest kind of quillwork technique to start on, and I believe 'em! :) But I plan to learn more, been practicing a little, haven't made anything yet. Got a bunch of beadwork to do first, in trade for that Hawken and the tack job on it!
:thanks:

Is this Linda, from tipis-tepees-teepees? I might know you from some other lists, lodge owners and Plains NDN Seminar...if so, nice to see you here too.

I've been into outdoor skills all my life - grew up on a ranch in Texas. I reckon my grandmother and Aunt Maggie started me on the path of liking to make things with my hands - they taught me how to card cotton and I made a little doll quilt on a treadle sewing machine when I was 6 (haven't made any since though!). Did a little macrame, carpentry & plumbing (you know, traditional women's skills...), embroidery, needlepoint, and crochet in the 70's and 80's, but then I fell off into beads, got "strung out" on them, and can't get shed of that habit!! Love 'em!

Been doing beadwork since around 1993, learned flintknapping in 1995-96 (used to live with an artist/ flintknapper), started working with gourds around '95 too, started making baskets in about 1999, did the totem poles in the summer of 1998 I think, just did that quilled wheel about a year and a half ago, and took my first blacksmithing class (from a woman, here where I live) this last February.

I could shoot a rifle before I could multiply, but we didn't have any muzzle-loaders in the collection, so I'm just starting out with that since I got my Hawken a couple of weeks ago. I love learning new stuff, and this forum looks like a great place for that!
thanks!

soquile,
Do you accept PM? I sent you one a day or two
ago concerning a knife sheath. Just wondering if you would
consider making one for me :hmm:

:hmm: Uhhh, what's a PM?? I didn't get one, whatever it is... Still getting used to this format...

But sure, I'd be glad to make you a knife sheath, and I'm honored that you want one. I'm a little backed up with work right now (traded beadwork for that Hawken), might be the end of summer before I could do it, but we can sure talk about it. Email me at [email protected]. Thanks!
