I finally got my Kodiak Safari Express 72 caliber double barrel rifle!
I am very excited and happy, except...
I am having a heck of a Time finding number 11 primer caps. Brick and mortar is out, so my only option is online. The sites that I do find them on want me to use zelle, which I dont have, or paypal, but only with "friends and family" selected, which of course means I am screwed if they are scammers because there is no buyer protection. Sites with other payment options are all out of stock.
They explain that PayPal will not allow Munitions to be sold, so that is the compromise. It does not make sense, but someone here has more experience than I do and might know if this
is standard practice. It seems to be a common theme on a variety of sites that sell Pyrodex and percussion caps. Any experience would be greatly appreciated, thank you

My advice is contact the NMLRA, find a local chapter, contact them to find a monthly shoot near you. Any shoot of decent size should have a sutler who sets up and sells caps, powder, arms of all sorts, and various sundries.

Just a reminder, selling or buying caps or powder on here is strongly frowned upon.

While there are periods they seem scarce as hen’s teeth on the market I was wondering why I NEVER see them here. Why is it discouraged?

Just about every one of these on-line sites that demand the use of Zelle, or other cash apps have proven to be a scam.

Think about it, if your local small or large gun shop doesn't have any, the big box stores like Cabela's or Sportsman's Warehouse doesn't have them, or even Wal-Mart, how could an on-line store have everything in stock ready to ship at a great price? And they want you to use a cash app where you have zero hope of getting your money back?

Things we need are starting to show up through traditional, legitimate sources. Be patient and perform daily searches. You will find them.

Good luck, and hope this helped.

I would guess that it’s because people can’t ship them? You’d be limited to a face to face transaction.

Powder and primers are explosives. Seems a big risk to the site and the users to facilitate moving that kind of stuff between people who don't really know each other. And shipping is another risk on top.

To the OP's question, and others have said, zelle or bank transfer or any other form of payment like that is a scam. If you find a reputable online retailer with caps you will likely need a minimum order and a hazmat fee. Local events may have a vendor, and caps are occasionally found in Walmart or other chains.

I did a search for CCI #11 percussion caps. Came up with dozens of scam sites all saying they were in stock. Upon further inspection, they all demanded some form of non-refundable payment (none accepted credit cards). Some of the supposed U.S. addresses were spelled wrong, things were written in a way that someone from the U.S. would never write them, etc. My advice is only buy from a company that you know exists.

No not "frowned upon"... specifically prohibited in the rules. ;)

CORRECT. The Forum does not need somebody prohibited from possession of "ammunition components" or some bad actor bent on a terror act, acquiring components for a "device" or learning how to fashion components to create such a device, by participation here. Since we have no real way of knowing who might be such a person, we cannot screen them out, BUT we can stop public discussion and sales here.

What folks do in a private setting is... private.

Welcome to the forum.

As others have said if the seller will not take credit cards it is a scam.

Your location states California so as you probably already know Wal Mart is unlikely to stock any percussion caps or any black powder shooting supplies. Here in Northern California Wal Marts do not sell any percussion caps or firearms.

Was in Sportsman's Warehouse and Bass Pro last week. Both had powder but no percussion caps.

Agree with all who have posted.

Also, be wary of any online "store" that makes no mention of a hazmat charge of appx $30. That's another red flag I've seen from time to time. If it's too good to be true in terms of initial price and an apparent absence of a hazmat fee, on top of required methods of payment offering no buyer protection or recourse, then it IS too good to be true.

Percussion caps are held in the same category as powder and modern primers by US DOT and this require shipment by a licensed hazmat shipper. Not just the carrier, but the party selling the product.

I also imagine the selling through shipping if these types of items here is prohibited because I'm sure forum admins want to be sure this forum cannot be held culpable for facilitating illegal shipment of hazmat. Which to me is more than reasonable. FTF sales are a thing all their own and perfectly legal. But once shipping is brought into then equation, things can get very sketchy. Think of a scenario where the truck carrying the unmarked hazmat and there is an accident with a fire. It's then determined that there was unmarked illegal hazmat on the truck, property is damaged, maybe life and limb lost. It's only a matter of following the paper trail and figuring out who sent the material. That's something I would want no part of. Availability of all of the hazmat reloading components for both muzzle loaders and modern cartridge rifles has sucked lately. And it sucks having a $30 hazmat fee added on top of actual shipping and the price of the item. But right now it is what it is and it's something we have to deal with

They are 110% scam

For what ever reason this is a hard learning curve for people to figure out. We get the same inquiry over. And over.

Regardless of the message board.

If an online store only accepts Zelle or Paypal F&F it's almost a guaranteed scam.

KyGunCo. has them in stock, I don't have any experience ordering caps from them personally, but I know it's a real place. KYGUNCO

I'm not sure where you're at in California, but Sportsman's Warehouse shows them in stock at their stores in Corona, Rancho Cordova, Elk Grove, Rocklin, Brentwood, Fairfield, Chico, Rohnert Park, and Eureka. It doesn't appear they offer shipping though.

I am near Fresno, so all of the cities that you mentioned are or quite a ways away, but it looks like I'll be making the trip to one somewhere. Guess I'll be stocking up while I'm there lol
