Where do you get your tanned leather to make sheaths, bags, etc? I have Googled for local dealers and wholesalers but to no avail. I'd like to make some nice sheaths and maybe a couple of bags but it is hard to find people in southern New England who sell leather. Thanks.

www.wickett-craig.com
they are in Pennsylvania and are one of two tanneries left in the USA (the other is Herman Oak which sells only through dealers)- their tooling and holster leather now comes in double shoulder at 8-10oz (good for knife sheaths, holsters, etc) and they will split it for free to 4 oz which is perfect for shooting bags.
The price is generally less and the quality much better than the imported stuff from Tandy/LF and others........plus you're buying American...

That looks like a heck of an outfit that knows how to do business. But unless I'm reading the site wrong, it looks like they only do a few dye colors- black, maroon or russet. Am I reading it wrong, or do I have to go the custom color route?

Yep kind of like Henry Ford's originals - if you want any other color you've got to die it yourself, which most pro's prefer...

Hey partner- I'll second Birddog6 on the Leather Unlimited recommendation. I recently bought (among other items) the 5lb latigo rectangle bundle (item # SP1022)for $7.50 and have had enough for three knife sheaths, a new bag, haversack strap AND new mocassin soles... and I still have scraps left!! http://www.leatherunltd.com Remember to request a catalog when you order!

I go to the Tandy store in Chelmsford. They are not cheap, but they have all types of leather lying around. They have a great selection of tools, hardware, supplies, and kits in store too.
Outside of this place, New England seems to be a desert for retail leathercraft supplies.
