Hi, I am building a Southern Mtn/N. Carolina flavor rifle. The tang is about 5" long. If I install the tang bolt into the trigger plate the bolt will only be about 1" behind the barrel leaving a lot of tang hanging out there. It just doesn't look/feel right. I have no problem using a tang screw instead because I understand it would be correct. But... How far back do I place it - midway? I can't find a picture of one to help me. Does anyone know of a book I can buy that will have pictures of Southern Rifles, especially N. Carolina?? Thanks, Kurt/IL

These guns often did not have the tang bolt going through to the trigger plate.

They used multiple wood scerews to secure the tang.

The trigger plate was held in place by the trigger guard.

Jerry Noble has 3 books out on Southern gun makers. I only have the first two. Vol II is the best. :imo:

I use a tang bolt for one, (I know not correct but I don't want to tast that barrel)) and a screw with the same size head for the other. I don't think there is a right place or a wrong place to put it. I have even seen some with 3 screws. Just place it toward the end to hold the long tang end down.

Note -- I see Jerry's number listed above. He has asked that his number be called between 8PM and 10 PM. Also that is the number where you can purchase his books.
