Would a small oval patchbox be right on a
flint Tennessee rifle rather than the banana
style?

As I recall, there were (are) a lot of them without any patchbox at all but I would think if the rifle is a Caplock, a small oval patchbox would work.

Companys like Tryon and others were selling these patchboxes (Capboxes) by mail order thruout the middle and late 1800s.

At the risk of being wrong, I think the folks in the Tennessee region pretty much had their rifles made with the extras they liked and that they could afford to buy.
My comment could explain why we see guns without even a butt plate on up to some that were moderately fancy.

I have seen round boxes on several TN guns and others guns that would be considered Southern guns. Round boxes, kind of like those on Hawkins. They were all caplocks though. I can't say I have ever seen one on a flintlock but that surely doesn't mean they did not do that. Just that I have not seen it.

Any chance of photos of these Southern guns with the smaller round patch boxes or links? I would like to see some of them myself!
