I wonder what TRS uses for a mainspring (and frizzen spring) vise to assemble their miquelet locks ? Thought about trying to talk to Jess at TRS and ask him, but figured I wouldn't have any luck speaking with him.

Rick

Why not ? I met Jess Melot when he first started off I found him a very personable gentleman no airs about him ( unlike that Rudyard fellow ! ) If I recall he gave me a gorget, I was with Phillip Ackerman at F ship we promoted his castings .& Blackley's
.Rudyard

Hi Rudyard. No, don't take my comment wrong. I found everyone at TRS very cordial and good people. I guess I shouldn't "assume" anything. Going to give them a call this week.
Funny you mention Phil Ackermann. Paul Ackermann is almost finished assembling a 1650's French lock for me from a kit. LOL Small world.

Rick.

Well good on Paul. Philip is dead some years now .He did have a son but I never met him Phillip had a Jigs tools & fixtures back ground .Could be . Regards Rudyard

New idea! This one will hook around the back of the lock plate. I made a model out of wood...

Lots of filing. Not done yet, but this one shows promise.

You have to remove the sear spring to get the clamp in its proper position. With the **** in half **** position. Then turn the screw in to compress the mainspring. The bottom jaw is brass to avoid marring the lock plate. The groove that slides around the top of the lock plate has just enough room to add brass shim stock to avoid more scratches. If I were disassembling a real nice antique lock, I’d use cardboard padding or tape.

What I like about it is it is a simple strong design that’s easy to make. You can shim it to fit different locks.

Great work Sam !!! Interesting concept. Different. But it obviously works. Sort of works in the reverse of the original vises. Congratulations.

I think I finally got my guy to start moving. Will let you know what we come up with. Thanks for posting photos. Very cool.

Rick

Thanks! I went with main compression screw and jaw from the bottom as there was no room for the **** to be let forward with the clamp the other way. It was the simplest, sturdiest, fastest way to make one. With some decorative filing and a older looking compression screw, I think it would pass muster. Now my brain hurts from too much thinking.....
