I was rummaging around in my shed and came across an old bottle of Sperm Oil (oil from Sperm Whales) that I forgot I had. It's a pint glass bottle with a lable that says M.M.&R. Importers Inc. est 1895. Years ago when you could get it, it made great patch lube. Any of you old timers ever use it? This bottle is over half full, maybe I'll use it up. :hmm:

I purchased some of the synthetic oil awhile back. Boy does it stink. I don't believe I would like that smell while shooting. Does the original smell of old fish too?

It has an oder but actually it doesn't smell bad at all.

IMHO using it on patches would be a waste. This stuff is treasured for lubricating gun actions of all kinds.

There are still a few countries that have limited whaling as I recall. Has anyone ever seen this stuff for sale in recent times? I mean even if it were from a blue whale or a humpback I imagine it would be about the same stuff!

Ned Robert's book says that the old timers used Sperm oil and bear oil or grease for patch oil and gun oil. Should be good.

One source I Googled indicated that it was commercially used into the 1960's.
NWTF Longhunter, while it may have various uses, unless you have another use for it or plan on selling it or something, why not use it as a patch lube? I encourage you to shoot with it again and derive some pleasure from the Official Animal of the State of Connecticut and one of our Earth's greatest "fellow mammals".

$2,000 PENALTY ASSESSED FOR ILLEGAL ATTEMPTED SALE OF SPERM WHALE OIL
OVER INTERNET

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration charged a resident of Lincroft, N.J., with four counts of selling or attempting to sell sperm whale oil over eBay’s online auction site, in violation of the Endangered Species Act. NOAA is an agency of the U.S. Commerce Department.

NOAA’s Office of General Counsel for Enforcement and Litigation assessed a $2,000 penalty against Alan Troshane for the infraction, which took place between March and April 2000. Troshane found the sperm whale oil in the basement of the school where he worked and advertised the whale oil for sale on the Internet-based auction site for $40 per ounce.

During the course of an investigation by NOAA’s Office for Law Enforcement, Troshane admitted the violation and subsequently paid the penalty.

Sperm whales are listed under the Endangered Species Act. The act governs the taking, possession, transportation, sale, purchase, barter, exportation, importation of, and other requirements pertaining to wildlife and plants determined to be threatened or endangered.

NOAA is one of the federal agencies enforcing the regulations under the ESA that make selling or offering to sell endangered species parts or products illegal.

Here's what appears to be the laws relating to it:

If the oil lawfully existed prior to Dec. 28, 1973, then a temporary exemption of some kind could have been applied for, but which would have expired by now and could only have been renewed for a limited number of time periods, (with possible exceptions for native Alaskans?).
Interstate commerce in any whale parts or oils appears to be banned, unless there are possibly specific high level permits and exemptions.
I think that NWTF Longhunter should shoot with it and get rid of the evidence! :haha:

Don't have to worry how to use it anymore, the bottle got dropped on the stone walk from the shed to the house .. it's oil gone  :(

whale it's a shame.
I have eated whale meat and it's not bad.
Conservation is a fine thing and keeping all the whale spieces alive is a noble cause. I am all for it, I don't think any of them should be hunted to extiction.
But to make it illagle to have a bottle of old oil!!!
give me a break.
i see where norway, iceland and japan are pissed off at the whale federation, with good cause.
small countries with no land and large populations to feed.

If you like it and cant get any more, jojoba oil is suposed to be close to it in make up.The are both a liquid wax ester with a long chemical chain. It is said jojoba oil may even be a little better for it has a longer shelf life. Its been around a long time, not used by whitemen untill recently but the indians used it.If you do a search you will find the 2 oils are almost alike.

Iceland as a small country with little land and a large population to feed?

It's about the size of Ohio, with a population maybe a third or a quarter of the size of Columbus.
I visited Iceland while a college student; a neat country, although rather limited in natural resources (my field of study). You'd better like fish and mutton if you live there, and don't be squeamish about volcanoes.
