I have added oil based stain to Tru-Oil when spraying it with an airbrush and it works well. Usually I have to thin the Tru-Oil whether or not I’m using stain, for that I use naphtha.

There are dye stains available for use with lacquer. This is the historically correct way to finish antique radio cabinets. Spray lacquer was used on cheap factory guns in the past. The only reason was speed. I would never put spray lacquer on a nice ML. I do use it on quickie jobs that I do not care about. Say a pistol grip on a modern gun. Mohawk makes rattle can lacquer with color in it already. To use it the wood needs to have the grain filled. IF not the grain shows like countess pin pricks. I use the separate lacquer dye stains as if they were any other dye stain to tint the finish. On keeper stocks I do not mix it with the finish. Keep in mind if you put color in a built up finish when you cut it back between coats the over all color will become lighter.
