I am spreading the traditional :peace:  BP bug amongst family and friends. I bought pap in law and son a muzleloader. My pap bought a gpr percussion, and now my bro in law is ordering one. NO INLINES. My bp hunting stories may have been too much for them and now they desire to share in the adventure and the ways of the forest. Spread the bug :applause: :applause: :redthumb: :redthumb:

I was spreading the same virus today but in a different way. We had a shoot and a 9 year old asked to shoot if it doesn't kick to hard. Loaded my 50 down to 20 grs. we got off a few shots even hit a gong or to. Now he is going to get his brothers and cousins and parents out because he is so excited. Hope to add about 4 or 5 newbies to the group in a month or to. Got to keep the young ones interested.

Say - that brings up a good point. How LOW can you go? I mean, how small a charge can you put into a .50 without being worried about the projectile not coming out?

IMO, the minimum amount of powder depends a lot on the gun.
With a drum precussion style, or a regular flinter the minimum amount is "enough so the bottom of the ball and patch are higher above the breech plug face than the center of the drum, or the touchhole. Less than that and the ball/patch will block the fire from the cap or the pan flash to the main charge.

For a Patent Breech plug style, I think you need enough powder to fill the cavity in the breech plug plus a little more so the ball/patch can compress it a little.
From some of the Patent Breeches I've seen that would be at least 20 grains.

Course, Ahve been wroooo....mistaken before. ::

I was using an Investarms Hawkin and it seemed to like the 20gr. charge. Fired just a well as if it had a full charge. I didn't try to go lighter because it was working so well and the trigger pull was a bit long and the rifle heavy for the child. His first question was how much will it kick. After the first shot it was, I would like to shoot it again. I think we have a new convert. This charge imbedded the ball, ball deep in a 2 X 4 at 25 yards.
