I am making a Spanish Locking Knife. This is a PC design shown in Neumann's book, Swords and Blades of the American Revolution. The folder has a one piece handle and the spring is on top of the handle, screwed into the handle.
I hear about "spring steel". I thought a spring could be made from any type of high carbon steel, that the spring was a product of temper. Can any type of high carbon steel be used? I plan to heat to critical temperature- bright red and quench then temper. What color should I look for in a temper or should I "cook" the quenched steel and at what temperature and for how long and do multiple "cooks" improve the spring. Thanks for any help.
